Title: Switching to Discord
Post by: ○ Μαρία ○ on May 21, 2016, 01:15:31 AM
Hey guys! So, I've chatting to Coolz some about potentially switching from TS3 to Discord instead. The two provide the same services, and honestly I personally think Discord is a much better program. It's free, its appealing to look at, the quality is pretty clear and crisp with nice functions. Can send news out, free phone app. But if you want more than just my own opinion here is an entire Reddit post dedicated to differences: https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/3h344a/why_should_i_use_discord_instead_of_skype_and_ts3/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/3h344a/why_should_i_use_discord_instead_of_skype_and_ts3/)

I was pretty reluctant to switch from TS3 to Discord awhile back, but honestly it's so nice to use and so much better, I've been really excited about potentially bringing it up to the Random community.

I've used several forms of communication; Teamspeak, Skype, Ventrilo, Curse, Discord, even Steam for some wacky reason.

Discord has been my favorite by far. It's like a combination of Skype and Teamspeak done right. I haven't had any issues with it, it's been mobile friendly. The bots you can include for it can be fun or useful, its very easy to manage. I'm currently on several different discord chats and its very easy for me to keep up to date on all 6 of them, and linking videos, images, links, pretty much anything has been easy and friendly.

I would suggest Discord every time. Its updates have been good, and its gaming/streaming friendly. I would honestly use Discord over a forum for discussions, its much easier to keep track of.

This is my personal opinion, and I'll respect whatever you guys decide, but I definitely encourage you guys to try Discord before you vote against it. I haven't had any problems with it.

Holy shit it has a web interface that supports voice... it may have my vote now, but I'm concerned about a few things.

It seems more of a social application, with it's own friends lists etc, which may be something people don't want to also manage.

My other concern is lack of voice codecs... so no more hq audio streams.

Here's a link to the features: https://discordapp.com/features

Here's a direct breakdown with ts3

To be honest i prefer discord lately, The social aspect, I dont give a damn about, friendslist.. got 0 :P, I'm only in the channels somewhere.
As to HD audio streams, the normal stream is quite HD enough for normal music, tbh I dont know whether higher quality audio is worth it atm(note, do have crappy headphones so does not apply much).
Somehow I havent ended up on the rnd ts3 much.. :/

I haven't either, simply from using Discord more often and not having much other reason to open up ts3 other than that. It would be nice to have an rnd Discord

I think it is also really important to note that Discord updates frequently and with their updates come far more features. So while they may have few voice codec's now, it is highly possible they will be added in soon enough.

I setup a server so people can try it and see what it feels like: https://discord.gg/011jRmrAXvfn53Ybn

Still working out permissions and stuff!

I prefer discord too since you can just use it in the webbrowser.

But lately some of my friends have problems with discord that the audio doesn't work.

I like discord, though I dislike it's gui visually, especially how bloated most of the things are (a lot of empty space). Which takes a lot place for my resolution.

Discord is alright but I think I'll stick to teamspeak for now. I don't particularly like some of the "features" that it has. Maybe if they hash it out in the future then I'll like it. It is new after all.

I'm gonna keep a list of changes that mainly effect us in particular.
Tell me if I missed anything.

Pros to switching
Cons to switching
Some rNd users won't be on ts3 in favor of discord
Sound codec and bitrate limitations
Free phone app
UI too big
Free web chat with voice
All voice, posts, etc. are stored for the discord service to work

I still prefer to use ts3. I dislike how discord chat can show the full history of what anyone has said, however I do like how the chat embeds pictures and other link information.

Or people can learn to deal with being shit talked behind their backs...

That's a WHOLE different subject.
I'm for switching to Discord, but I think everyone has to agree to switch.

People can have private channels that they can have set up to not save chat history. So, that's actually not even an issue.

UI too big
I really agree with this as well. Discord forces you to have the window at a certain size. If you make it smaller, some of the menu's are too big and will no longer fit in the window (such as the settings menu). Someone with 2 screens probably wouldn't care about this too much, but I have 1. So much of the interface is unused blank color. Is this supposed to be stylish?  Also the memes on the loading startup screen are... unneeded.

To me the pros seem less and less each time I use it.

Been using discord for a little over a year now, honestly it has some really nice features that Mumble and Teamspeak, the biggest problem i run into is connections. Sometimes the whole discord server will shut down for hours, and there is random disconnects at times. You can use it on mobile which is pretty neat, and the mobile app has the majority of things to do compared to PC
