Title: Thoughts on recent Valve decision?
Post by: Cake Faice on April 25, 2015, 03:52:22 PM
Hello folks! So I tried to get back into video games as a fun hobby to pass the time, but ultimately I was reminded why I stopped enjoying games in the first place.

I'm sure most of you are aware of Valve and Bethesda's latest decision to allowed transaction mods (aka micro-dlc) and completely destroy the faith that game modding was built upon. As much debate that can be made from this, our saviorex-savior Gabe Newell decided to have a Q&A on Le Reddit. Here is his wonderful showcase of beating around the bush/not predicting the future:

Any thoughts?

Gabe sure does avoid questions a lot. Especially from the owner of Nexus. They got into a discussion about it, and I really hope it turns for the best for not-Valve.

I honestly believe it will be the downfall of Valve if they keep it up.  Say this spreads to Garry's Mod and Kerbal Space Program.  The sole reason so many people play those games is because you can do so much more with the mods built for them.  If those mods begin to have prices put on them, it will destroy the player base, ruin servers, and ultimately make the games infinitely more bland.

Usually, I love everything Valve does.  But this... This is utterly bullshit.

The only way to fix this is if every user on Steam boycotts this system.  If people will buy these mods, Valve will get money and not give a single fuck about the rest of us.  They need to see that this is a waste of time and will significantly increase their EA-like status with their users.

I think it's perfect that the modders can demand compensation for their hard work. Emphasis on CAN, they're not forced to.

>hard work
>shit like swords made in 5 hours have a $2 price tag on them
>They only get 25% of the profits
>no payout till they make at least $100
>mods having a price tag in general

It's a shitty system.

Really sad it had to come to this.

I have three words that can describe the probable outcome to this system.

Train Simulator 2015

So this idea does actually have a potential to do some good things if it was approached more carefully.

The main mistake was to make the first attempt on an extremely well known game with an extensive and vocal community. It makes sense to do that from a technical standpoint since you can test the idea and be able to get lots of results.

But they left their common sense hat at home for this one not taking into account what it was going to be like to drop this idea into the hands of thousands of modders. They also forgot that no sane person on this earth likes to suddenly have to pay for something that they had previously for the past 20 years gotten for free. If they had instead partnered with a new developing game and from day one said this system was going to be in place. They would probably had a much better chance of making it work.

There are some cool implications on what can be done with this idea, but it is in a minefield of potential pitfalls and they royally screwed up the initial implementation of this.

The Skyrim rating went from 98% Overwhelming Positive to 88% Very Positive.

Shit be crazy.

It's being removed. Fuck the people who said bitching doesn't do anything. I don't think the results would have been the same if people did this "calmly."

We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating. We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there's a useful feature somewhere here.

I wonder if this is canned for everything or just Skyrim. Would be weird if Space Engineers still got it.

They'll try and pull something similar with mods on another game, hopefully not another paywall, but it's possible, nothing stops Valve other than not getting a buck.
