Title: I need a free antivirus
Post by: Prox on August 20, 2013, 09:49:25 AM
I got my windows reinstalled on Friday and now I'm running windows 7 ultimate. For some reason my internet modem didn't liked that so it took me some time to get it working again. Now that it's working and I'm downloading all sorts of things I thought I would need a free antivirus program for my PC that wouldn't pop up whenever I do something so if any of you guys could recommend me a good free antivirus then that would be great.

oh boy

A lot of people recommend AVG and it's what I'm currently using and it seems to work well so you could go with that.

Been using AVG for 4 years and it's great. No viruses, everything's working fine.

I'm pretty okay with Avast, really. I don't know wether AVG does it, but Avast puts every new .exe into a virtual machine, before letting you use it on the OS.

You cannot go wrong with AVG. I have recommended AVG to few people in this thread and many other people that I know.

There is a lot of hype with the new version of AVAST but to be honest it seems to be on the same level as AVG - they just seem to be pushing their new Windows 8 interface.

Also, the people that have used AVAST that I know wanted something else because of the annoying notifications that come out of the box.

With either solution I also recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It's not a real time scanner (in the free version) but it's a really good scanner to have on your system to scan periodically or have during an infection.

AVG Free+Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free is gg

The only reason you aren't getting any viruses with AVG is because it fails to detect them.
Personally, I have had a bad experience with AVG in the past. Through both real-world situations and testing by purposely infecting machines, I've found that AVG often failed to detect what other free anti-viruses do detect.
However, this was in 2010. AVG might have gotten better since then.

coolz / other people who use AVG, how long have you been using it?

Yeah AVG wasn't always the best but they have definitely improved in the last few years.

Also keep in mind, lots of free antivirus can use many potential heuristic or false positives in their definitions.

All of my clients have been virus free after using it and I have heard no complaints from them.

Personally however, I do not use a virus protection application.

AVG gave me a ton of false positives, and I raged.

Been using Panda Cloud for a good 2 years now I think.
Never has let me down.

Its main strength is that it is very very light because its cloud base.
This also means your definitions are always up to date.
The free version will give you all you need.

I use AVG Free and have not gotten a virus in years.  Last time I used MSE I got a blue screen but I think that was an isolated incident.

Alright, so I think I'll be downloading AVG but before I do that I want to ask one more thing, does it effect your computer's performance and by how much? I want to try to keep my computer as fast as possible since I'm going to try to play Battlefield 3 with this 3 years old PC.

Yes most do to some extent. While you play I would disable automatic scanning.

AVG

MSSE has flaws

plus AVG is pretty smart about its scanning n shit... paused during games and only scans when idle/browsing and seems to lock itself to 1 core... unnoticable unless on an Intel atom single core
