Title: Gaming Socially?
Post by: McDreary The Hapless Hamster on December 28, 2012, 02:15:28 AM
While talking to my dad today he was saying that the social interaction  between people over video games isn't what it used to. He then told me how 9ish years ago on games like Unreal Tournament  you really got to know the people you played with. like when his UT buddies would ask how I was doing when I was in the hospital, or how he would talk to a girl he met on a game for hours keeping her company (she was dying from cancer.) And now on games you just don't make friends anymore. Like Guild Wars 2 where often someone you quest with and talk to for a few hours just ends up being another stranger on a friendlist. I think it just depends on what you play. Having played more games than my dad and seeing awesome communities in games like Minecraft and Gmod. So do you guys think social interaction is dying in gaming? or is it just the games you play? or any other thoughts? please tell. thanks  :)

I still believe it is a huge social platform, it just depends how much you and the other party are willing to invest in it.

How much you really invest or value online relationships mentally sets the bar for the potential relationships to come.

I think it all depends on the people you're playing with and maybe the type of game.
I've met many people here on GMod in this Community itself and in Killing Floor and in some other games,so I wouldn't say socialism is outright dying in-game.

It all depends on what game you are playing. Once you've become friends with someone through the game you have to use some sort of constant chat so you can talk about things other than the game. Hey, look at us guys. We've done it well.

Imo, it all depends on the game, and the open mindness of the other players.

Oh man. All those old memories from playing on the zombie survival server. Juan...

I also do think that social interaction in games has lessened because of the fact you are talking with complete strangers.

I'd say gaming socially is more popular than ever. Feel like it really exploded with the first xbox.

Though in my opinion. I don't think that making online friends is really needed/should happen, cause in the end, it's kinda pointless because the people/group of people will eventually all disconnect from each other, because that's how life is.

Not saying online friends is bad, more saying if someone is asked to hang out in the real life, and also asked to play a game with a friend online, they really should do the first one.

If you stick in one server for a long time you can meet some friends in that group. Basically that's how I got to RND.

In terms of meeting new people, naw man. We meet new people almost everyday and encounter them everyday. They join our mumble everyday and its up to them if they decide to stay or not. Its just that all the regular-goers of mumble will be dicks to the new people causing them to leave etc. Now if you cool as fuck, then yeah they'll treat you as if you're a friend and it starts from there.

We usually play games together, and its certainly a great tool for socializing and shit. Digital games come and go but the memories stay. Especially since we never play a big game without having 15+ good friends playing alongside you. That team work, that bonding, those laughs. It's great.

Gaming socially has evolved so much in my opinion. Several of us have met eachother in real life already and it all started with gaming. Hell, we all pitched in to rent a big house for a week in 3 months up in Boston and we're all staying there together, all 20 of us. So yes, I think gaming socially can provide you doors that you never thought existed or you'd never think in your life you'd do.

It's one thing I'm thankful for.

It all depends on the people you happen to play with.. I've been lucky enough to run into rNd and made friends with the majority of the GMod crew.. if any of you guys know of Elric Phares from ex-motherboards.org / tech of tomorrow youtube channel, I became friends with his son via social gaming and am now friends with Elric - got 'em both into GMod ;p
