Title: What happens after death? SERIOUS DISCUSSION
Post by: Juan_Ambriz on October 10, 2012, 11:59:34 PM
So I've been recently thinking about life after death, because of discussions about religion in AP History.

what happens when you die? Do you go into eternal darkness? Do you dream?

I'm Catholic (like most of the Mexican people lol) and of course I believe in god, now i do believe their is a heaven and hell. But recently I have been thinking about other things.

Like what if you go into eternal darkness, it's hard to thinK about it, but try; Darkness forever. FOREVER. That would be horrible. It's hard to even grasp the word "Forever" I think it's hard to grasp because there is no end,it goes forever lol...
Or
Dreaming for ever. That would be a little bit better.

Like I said I believe there is a heaven and hell after death.

What are your guys's beliefs and ideas about life after death?

Remember I posted this in the respect free section, feel free to input your opinion as long as it isn't bashing there idea/belief I don't want this to be a flame war. Kthx

I've thought about this before as well. Quite deeply in fact.

I've thought about the religion aspect, there being a hell an heaven and all. Didn't really think much of it, however.

The one I've thought was the most reasonable was that there is nothing after life. No pain, no suffering. No happiness, no joy. Nothing.

Now, I don't mean to sound emo or depressed, because I'm far from it. It's just, what makes us so special from anything else on this earth?

There is more of a reason to it, but I don't feel like getting to deep into it just yet.

If you've ever seen Torchwood, death and the afterlife was a reoccurring theme, even in the first episode.

It really made you think about this kind of stuff, albeit their explanation was pretty dark. It did a good job of making it more "scary" when you thought a character was going to die (and given the nature of torchwood, you really didn't know when someone was going to die).

As for my personal beliefs, I really don't know. I don't really have a belief as to what happens when you die. If you want to look at what science tells us, you just die. Brain activity ceases, nothing happens. It just stops.

I'm a pretty firm believer in the paranormal/ghosts though. The thing is though, my thoughts are entirely based on residual energy. Someone could be really attached to a place, or an object, and a imprint is left behind. That's the explanation I follow, at least. The residual levels can vary from events/sounds that just repeat through time, regardless if someone is there to hear it, to sentience or a "clone" of the person who was there.

Again though, that's getting into my crackpot theories about ghosts. Blame /x/ for that. Psychic energies and whatnot.

I wanted to say "Marie strips in front of you" but then I saw serious discussion...

But I always though of it of your beliefs, like if you believe in Heaven and Hell you either go to heaven or hell, same with atheism, you just go inside of another life, (animal, person, fish, etc).

Why do I think that? I have no slightest idea.

Agnostic ftw!

Anyways. Who knows man. Christians/Catholics have the best mindset really, you get to go to heaven.

If you die something good happens. Atheists and shit once you ded you ded. Which is kinda depressing mindset.
Though honestly, Heaven almost sounds boring because it's forever which seems odd and scary.

I wish it's like a vidya gaem. When we die, we just make a new character. :p

Yea, it goes on debates of philosophical crap. Makes people think "Am I really here?" And then people would use the old quote "I think, therefore I am." but then one could say "What if we were made to think that?" and the cycle continues with no real answer. lol

I'm an Atheist so I don't believe in an after-life, but then again I don't know what happens when you die. If I had to guess it's probably just an eternal slumber because you're DEAD.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For me? I don't know.

I'm hoping for a pocket reality-type haven or eternity inside an infinite sandbox. I'll build buildings/monoliths for the rest of my eternity under a sunset on a cool summer evening. Could be a dream, could be a metaphysical existence.

My 'hell' would be the darkness. I'd enjoy it too; but I wouldn't even "              ". It'd be nothingness.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It'd be nice not to anything ever after having done everything ever.

'Cool', boundless, nothingless nothing. Every single word is an oxymoron because nothingness doesn't have 'nothing' either, but that's okay.

I want to say I believe in reincarnation but I don't know.

It would basically be everlasting life except without the torture of knowing you will live forever

I just believe that that's it. Game over. You don't think, hear, sense, feel, see, or anything.

Who knows if there is a higher power that exists out there or not. Religion was just basically to set morals/standards for society. The first people on Earth didn't know how anything worked, so they worshiped anything that they didn't know, but was there for some reason, until society started to discover the purpose of natural things and how they came along.

Time moved on, people created more and more concepts of religion to instill fear to keep society structured...until technology and science advanced, and more and more stuff had a logical reason behind it, ex. natural elements, water, weather.

Maybe once you bite the dust, you get your own fantasy land or whatever, maybe with the option to shape it how you want it. No one knows...because no one brought back the declared dead so far.

In my opinion, this is the exact reason why Christians/Catholics have the WORST mindset.

If you're an atheist/don't believe in afterlife, then you would value your life so much more more and every opportunity you take is immensely precious because life is one-use and once you're dead, you're dead; There's no heaven to loaf around in for eternity.

However, if you are a theist/believing in the afterlife, you would live with the mindset that everything in life is trivial, and you wouldn't appreciate experiences as much because you ultimately feel that nothing here on earth would even measure up to what could be in the after life.

I don't really know, and I think the only way of knowing is to die. Therefore, I live my life as good as I can, and try not to blow my head over such trivialities. If the only reason you have to act "good" is the promise of Heaven or a Heaven-like place, you don't deserve such place.

Me too.  They actually have meat(or beef only?) free McDonalds in India because they believe Cows are people closest to human level reincarnation or something.

The idea of being born over and over x amount of times with no memory of each life is a bit depressing to me.  Not really something to hope for lol.

Thinking about it does seem depressing, but at the same time, it wouldn't matter since your mind would completely be erased of any and all memory, skill, and knowledge of anything that you learned from your previous life.

Now I couldn't stand if I had to be born again WITH memory of previous life. I wouldn't be able to take that at all.

If everything gets erased of your mind, pretty much that doesn't equal to the death of the guy you were?

I mean, if i died tonight and reincarnated as a prisoner in middle Africa, i wouldn't have the same toughs or feelings.

Now if i died and get to remember all my past life's and chose if i want to reincarnate or do other shit that would be a little bit different.

Yeah exactly i've always thought of it this way too, that we are our memories.  For example, people who have permanent memory loss basically died.  Our personality is shaped by our experiences / memories too, so everything comes from them.  If you lose them, you lose you.  If i were 'reincarnated' i'd definitely want to remember my past lives.

i would rather not be able to have my past memories, think about it, if you were to have memories from the past you would have memories about all the people, your parents, friends girlfriends teachers anyone that made you feel good or happy They would be memories and you will have the wanting to see them again but never can because they are just memories.
