Wax combined with Sony Vegas and/or Windows (live) movie maker. Wax for compositing and special effects, other two for cutting/editing a video together. Free too.

Definitely Vegas, there are many ways to pingaz it, and it's layout isn't fucked like the new windows movie maker.

If you also don't want to worry about the legalities behind pirating vegas, they have Vegas Silver on their website which is a free version of the software. You're just limited to I think four tracks.

Seriously: fuck live movie maker, if anyone must use WMM, they should use 2.6 w/ custom effects and whatnot you can get anywhere [an/or make your own].  MS fuckd up a piece of software that is useful even if there is better.

Vegas is prob the more simpler ones.
As long as you understand bit rates, codecs and whatnot.
