Title: Google to begin providing 1000mb internet and cable service
Post by: Seb on July 26, 2012, 07:32:10 PM

What do you guys think about it?

Personally, I REALLY don't like the rate Google has been branching out and I don't welcome our new Google overlords.

Here is a conversation I just had with a friend on the topic.

We'll just have to wait and see how truly good this service is. If it is good then let's hope it's available to lots of people and fairly priced too.

Personally, I hate my current provider (Time Warner) and really wish I could get my old one back (Comcast).

Time Warner is an excellent internet provider in the East Coast.

Well, you are wrong in my case.
It has "hiccups" of lost connection every day. And it is really annoying.

I'm with you man..

I mean they were allowed to build and send a satellite for google maps.. with a special designed camera with up to 10cm resolution.. for the government.

We only see so much.

They have their hands in a lot.. and I see from a business perspective it would make sense.. if you aren't expanding only way to go is down.. stagnate if lucky.

But yea.. they have lots of power.. with the services they provide.. now under that all inclusive terms of service.. it can be shared between any of the services.. legally.

Advertising.. searches.. ips.. emails.. all your internet traffic (potentially in future).

In a world where profiling people is a huge business (not just for advertising, think gov't etc etc.) it makes sense not only on a business perspective but on a whole other level.

Edit: Also don't forget pictures and video.. >youtube

*tin foil hat*

But yea i basically covet those speeds with a giant erection LOL

Ditto. I'm thinking I would eventually sign up, but the day I do that is the day I start making use of some infographics on how to make less-than-legal improv weapons that I have saved as a side-effect of browsing /k/.

/x/ also has a lot of good resources for prepping.

Hell, there's plenty of /k/ and /x/ cross thread debates on whose more ready for the end of the world.

I don't think that this 1 Gb google internet is going to take complete control over the internet service provider market. There will be competition, sure it may take months before other companies catch up, but I don't think google will end up being the lord and master of the internet.

The first to offer speeds like that for a price lower than that of my 15/1 get that tittle.

I don't think that will be possible for a while. Looks like you got confused between Byte and bit. A bit is a tenth of the size of a Byte, meaning that the speeds are around 100 MB/sec rather than 1000 MB/sec.

A lot of people dont understand the difference between GB and Gb so, before someone derps up

GB = Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes
Gb = Gigabit = 1024 Megabits

A bit is 1/8 of a byte.

What google fiber is promising is not 1024 MB, but an eighth of that; 128MB and that makes sense since they claim that their service is a hundred times faster than todays internet, and I highly doubt anyone here has a 10 megabyte/s connection.

Wow I thought it was 1GB. What's all the hype about if it's only 128MB? I have 12 MB net and I have a couple of friends that already have 100MB net.

All ISP's advertise their internet speeds as megabits. Your friend probably only has a speed of 12.5 megabytes.

Yes, as far as I can tell from their information page, but I am doubtful that it is the same 1 Gb speed internet.

The "free internet" (the $300 one time fee) says this:
Quote
Up to 5Mbps download, 1Mbps upload speed • No data caps • Free service guaranteed for at least 7 years • Includes Network Box
$300 construction fee (one time or 12 monthly payments of $25) + taxes and fees

I did. When I was at a camp at a university. At my house, I have 3, though that is after switching to using a direct ethernet cable. Before that, it was .5-.8. =P
