In attempting to forward my ports to host a server in Cry of Fear, my internet stopped working. After putting in the information and saving changes in my router, I had already re-booted twice. On the third time, the router refused to reconnect. I use a Ethernet cable connected to a router connected to a modem. Now, I'm stuck on "unidentified network, no internet access"
Using the laptop WiFi, I saw that I could still connect to it. Just not on the PC directly. Aparently, it doesn't have a valid IP configuration and now only has a IP of 169.254.x.x (X's are numbers) Which means that the DHCP server isn't giving my computer a IP.
Can anyone help? If I can't fix by today doing a hard reset on everything.

It's hard to help if we don't know the model of your router, or how you messed it up exactly.

It's a Dlink DIR-655 router. I tried forwarding the ports for Cry of fear using the dlink website.
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-655/default.htm (http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-655/default.htm)
That is what I tried to use. That's when it stopped working.
...Shit, I didn't read that you need a static IP to forward the ports.

I found out that it isn't the router/modem that's causing the problem. If I connect the ethernet cable to this laptop specifically, it still works.
From what it looks like, the computer isn't receiving the dhcp address from the router and keeps giving itself a local IP.
I've already tried the following
cmd prompt "netsh winsock renew"
cmd prompt "ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /dnsflush"
Restarting the router and modem SEVERAL times.
Manually putting an IP instead of the obtain automatically option
Disabled and re-enabled the Local Area Connection internet adapter
Checked on the gateway website (through this laptop) and saw that this laptop was the only one accessing the network
Yet again, help would be appreciated :/

Use Windows Repair? I know it sucks and stuff but you never know.
Or this: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-31695-get-ip-from-router-but-won-t-connect-to-out (http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-31695-get-ip-from-router-but-won-t-connect-to-out)

No windows repair, I've already recovered many times to previous points.
The person in that link uses XP, either way, it didn't work.

I don't mean System restore. I meant this.

Already done that many times. It just resets the local area connection, tells me to reset the router/modem, and then comes up with an error when I look for more options.

Is your local ip by any chance preset as in.
Open Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Properties of your wireless Adapter > Properties of Internet Protocol Version 4.
It should be set to (Obtain Ip address automatically).

Yeah, it's set to obtain ip address automatically. It isn't a wireless adapter though, it's a local area connection ethernet cable.
It's name is nForce 10/100/1000 mbps ethernet cable, if that helps.

bump
Well I tried reformatting with windows 7 again, didn't work. Tried factory reset, didn't work.
I'm basically out of options at this point and I'm close to just bringing it to some overpriced computer service nuts that probably won't be able to solve this.
Before I do that I just want to know if anyone can take one last look at this before I do that, and see if they know what's wrong :/

If I read the post right then do this on your PC:
Click the start button > type CMD in the search then hit enter > type in the command prompt > ipconfig /release then hit enter > ipconfig /renew then enter
Im not sure if that will fix it but u can give it a try.

goto your router my young padawan
I look on the back of it and hit the magical RESET key

That, That how I fixed my Router when I was trying to host a Dev Server for my map.

Yes...As I've said I have reset it many times, even hard reset it. Nothing.

Your router might be dead.

For crying out loud. Guess I have to put it in big font

The router's ports are working. There's nothing wrong with the cable. The router works completely fine LAC on the laptop AND WiFi. It's just not connecting to the DESKTOP.

Manually putting an IP instead of the obtain automatically option
Did you manually change the IP on your laptop AND change the setting in your router AND modem to Static IP?
You have to change all three or your router may start handing out renewed IPs.
Once you have set an IP specifically for your laptop, forward the ports for the game you want to host on both your modem and router.

I'm not talking about the laptop....I'm using the laptop as a way to access the internet.
I didn't set a static IP for the desktop before I forwarded the ports, I'm assuming that's why it didn't work when I tried setting up the server thing.
Either way, no, I didn't.
If you mean me trying to put the IP of the router and setting a new one instead to try and fix it, I didn't change any settings with the router or the router. Just put one of the IPs the router would use for a computer.

Thake the router and run over it with a car that should fix it.
But on a serious note did you check to see that the physical connection (computer port is fine) try bridging the wifi connection from the laptop to the pc. Connect to the router from your lappy using WiFi then connect the Ethernet cable from the laptop to your pc. Then goto your change adapter settings menu on lappy select the two right click and bridge them.

Alright, tried what you did.
The computer had the same result, unidentified network, no internet access. The bridge couldn't connect, or something along those lines.
So that proves it has something to do with the computer itself. I'm really hoping it isn't the network adapter hardware.
-
It probably is the network adapter hardware. I mean, you reset like everything. Most likely a hardware problem.

But I don't see how rebooting the router/forwarding the ports can fuck up the hardware...
