Title: The REAL 2012 Crisis: Is the Internet dying?
Post by: Killerdog119 on January 06, 2012, 02:57:04 PM
I made this poll because I would really like to know what people would do if that bill passes. I am also hoping that this poll will help guys (and womenz) like me realize that this bill isn't something that can just be ignored and will go away.

P.S. I probably should get used to the forums BEFORE i start posting, sorry guys newbie mistake!(didnt know it was in new members intro.)

listen, SOPA is not going to destroy the internet. But it certainly will be a punch in the face. SOPA wasn't even the government. It was just Hollywood who probably bribed a bunch of people to support it because even though they make billions and billions of dollars every year and complain about losing a couple million because of people who pirate their stuff.

A million dollars is like a quarter to big companies.

Its not about destroying..Its about the fucking power its giving to the government.
>Dad makes video of little boy eating Ice cream
>Posts it youtube
>Hollywood sees the dad saying "I love you" which is said in many movies
>Dad is sued, Video Removed
A lot of us do care if the internet is removed, the main reason im pissed is that it gives the fucking Government too much power its really UNfair

Even if this passes, people will always find a way around it.
And the piracy is already all round the internet, it is impossible to stop it.

I would only give it a few months.

I will personaly participate in a riot if given the opportunity (EX: If happening in my city or an adjacent one.) to get there. What I am worried about is the amount of people who are going to do nothing at all becasue they think they can't or they are lazy. This bill will cause problems with everyone and it's better to stop it now so that the government knows not all of it's citizens are idiots who don't know all the laws of the country.

Even if this passes, people will always find a way around it.
And the piracy is already all round the internet, it is impossible to stop it.

I'd give it no time at all. There are already methods that the government can't simply stop, but it's going to suck ass to those people who use common ones. Want a realy good comparison? It's simair in reason to why America had no way to "Win the war of drugs.".

Goverments suck, get over it. Total fucking anarchy is best politics.

You'll never be free with a government. No matter how much you repeat it to yourself. People from the US ARE NOT FREE.

But SOPA allows for the whole website to be taken down, as opposed to individual torrents and links. SOPA also allows American internet blacklisting, the same kind of internet censorship the Chinese use to block certain sites. If the bill is passed, and you one day decide to go on utorrent, the site will be blocked with the big American eagle on it saying that the site is not allowed for blah reasons

Also, remember the bill that is being pushed behind SOPA. ProtectIP which aims to do exactly that, stop piracy in the most invasive way possible..

No no... Before SOPA people were allowed to use game/movie copyrighted footage/video to do whatever, such as movie and game reviews, mashups, montages, etc and that was allowed under the American Constution. With SOPA, the companies have the right to:

1. Take whatever video that image is in
2. Shut down the website that is hosted said video

So SOPA effectively shifts the responsibilty for posting copyrighted material from the person, to the host. Which is why it's such a big deal. Youtube, facebook, google, wikipedia, 4chan, reddit, streaming sites, can all be potentially crippled.

This wouldn't SERIOUSLY happen. The whole country would look like Fallout 3 after, minus radiation.

... Entertain me, what would the people in government who supported this act be in such a comparison?

If you look at it, it would make large, every day online companies suddenly become illegal, and they would all either go down, or leave to outside of america. Think that would be good for the american economy, especially at this time? It wouldnt even affect piracy because you can download a single file, and suddenly, complete access online again. Its only mildly irritating in terms of piracy. Hell, I would expect hollywood producers to lose money in the end from this for that reason, and also, who would support people that evectivly ruins the internet for the *average* user who doesnt know how to bypass it. Besides, the bill is a bit too open and it could pretty much allow the government to shut down any site that spoke poorly of the government. (Though im not sure if that would happen, but I wouldnt be surprised in the least).
Bill passes, america fucks itself pretty hard

The reason why the bill has gone this far is because, one, the majority of the American senators are 50 and know shit all about the computer and even less about the internet, two, they are dismissing all evidence of damage by SOPA with 'there is no factual evidence, just speculation' and three,

derpy corrupt governement

"what people would do if that bill passes"

Nothing, I'm Canadian this bill doesn't affect me at all. And seeing as like all pirate sites and the like or not hosted on American soil/servers the bill is only going to allow them to block Americans from viewing sites, and your government has no jurisdiction to shut down none American sites. In short only Americans are getting fucked.

Hey Shawn, you want to go pirate copyrighted materials and be legally permitted under the Canadian Copyright Laws?

Pirate? Come on now theres no such thing in Canada were allowed to do anything we want with Copyrighted material as long as we don't make money off of it :P

""fair dealing" provisions, the Copyright Act does allow individuals or organizations to use original works without such use being considered an infringement: criticism and review, news reporting, and private study or research (section 29). The Act also exempts certain categories of users, such as non-profit educational institutions (section 29.4)."

When i download a game without paying for it what I'm actually doing is researching into game development

Yes but since most sites are from the U.S the world is going to feel this as well.

Hmm no, most sites aren't hosted in the us.

Oh my bad :(

You know whats funny though? Anything we post is considered copyrighted under the act automatically :P

"Protection under copyright laws is automatic in Canada: as soon as an original work has been written down, recorded or entered as a computer file, it is immediately copyright-protected."

So we'll never have to worry about someone stealing our idea's and trying to make a profit off of it :P

When america fucked shit with the economy, the world felt that. Now that the government is purposely trying to fuck the economy even harder, how will that not affect you? Its not as simple as us losing access to a few sites, its making everday companies, and very large companies, criminal, and causing them to go out of business or leave america.

I don't use American company's therefore I'm not affected just like i wasn't affected when the economy "fucked up" in fact when the economy started to fuck up i started to make more money i got a 2% raise on my cheque, Honestly you guys blowing this bill way out of portion it's only going to be used for illegal sites/company's if the company's are 100% legal and have everything in order nothings going to happen!

Imagine this shawn:

Modern Warfare 4 comes out and people do reviews explaining how shitty it is with ingame footage to visualize.

Infinity Ward comes out and shuts it down on the basis that the video is using "Copyrighted footage" It's a horrible bill because it's vaguely worded and it gives even MORE power to the companies .-.

Its been confirmed. Shawn has created his own economy and isolated himself from the world, effectively creating a second planet within Earth. It shall be called M-149652.
Youtube will become an illegal torrent site
Google/paypal will be pretty much forced to keep an arm's length from america just to make money, and thousands of sites will be shut down. None of them breaking the law. Fair use will be a thing of the past in america, and thats not a minor thing in the least. Take that for example

And don, true. Saying its not going to likely cause a large amount of shit to happen, is also ignorant though. SOPA isnt a tiny thing, at all.
