Title: Idea to stop stronghold hackers
Post by: Juan_Ambriz on January 02, 2012, 08:54:40 PM
I think my idea is to complicating or something but.....
I think we should limit the entre to Stronghold by only allowing Trusted people into the server,

Now what do I mean by trusted?
I mean making another subforum and people who want to be trusted post there Bin folder picture with there name and steam ID, THEN if the Bin folder is proven to be trusted admins should add the ID to the Trusted list.

Can't someone install hacks after being trusted?
Yes but if caught they will be perma'd

What if someone tries to connect that isnt on the trusted list?
They should be kicked by console with a message saying something like
"go to randomgs.org to become trusted and play on this server!"

This is just a suggestion to stop The insane amount of hackers we have had.

Please don't post your idea on how to stop it, I just want to hear opinions on my idea because then people are gonna be all over the place with there ideas.

Then no one will bother playing on the stronghold server except for the select few who have gone out of their way to post an app to play on a whitelist server

This takes all the fun out of rNd, which is supposed to be welcoming to new users. By doing that, you're pretty much saying WE'RE EXCLUSIVE, YOU CAN'T ENJOY US UNLESS YOU ARE US.

No, this will cause a huge lack of players. It would make GreenShift more popular as well... But that isn't to much of a bad thing.

No, this would cause a shortage of players and might then make GreenShift be more populated...

On second thought, this is a great idea and should be added ASAP to prevent hackers from hacking on the server ever again. The OP deserves 1k +1s and should be given admin to invoke such a brilliant idea faster! /sarcasm

O.o
Lol you -1 me just for saying an idea? Really?

Yes, I did. You should be aware by now that the +/- system is a summary of posts. I do not simply give out such +/- 1s on a whim, your post was deserving of it from my point of view.

I also fear that the "[*color=black][*size=8pt]/sarcasm" went unnoticed in my post.

It's just you gave -1 for an idea. It may have went well in his head, but ideas always have some draw back to it that the creator sometimes over looks.
It's when you start dissing ideas, the good ideas stop coming because they're afraid of the feedback they may get back.

Hmm, that's a good point. I didn't expect such a chain reaction... It does add up though when compared to some other communities. Now where is the facepalm smiley...

Well, I agree and disagree with this.

This would cause less hackers to join- or rather even think about joining.
But like many said, it would decrease player entry, some players on the random servers doesn't even know about the forum lol, and some people are just to lazy to register and post a topic.
You could put forum link in the message box that would appear for Non-Whitelisted players like you said, which would help some players.

It won't make it harder for people to hack.

Like, at all.

It will only discourage people from even PLAYING on the server, and the idea only works if it also discourages hackers.

I have played Stronghold couple of times and it's fun for certain amount of time. Then it gets boring. And I haven't seen any hackers. I have seen couple reports, though.
There isn't such way to remove hacking from games. Sure you can try and should, but there is no way to stop them completely. Only way is to report and hope the hacker gets banned. This idea, like said previously, would be bad for Guests. Community always needs more players and players need community. By blocking the Stronghold server from 'normal' players, will stop them from getting known to this community and how awesome it is. Or bad

No

I have another idea though, why don't we implement an accuracy and headshot percentage log into the server. It would help catch a hacker.

Also, we should put a list of people we banned for hacks in the loading screen while joining the server. Propaganda!

The accuracy rating is a great idea, but it will cause people to be more concerned about their accuracy and for some players it's going to be a big deal.

Putting the list of banned IPs right out there isn't too good of an idea, remember the community that released all the people it banned for Seth hacks? It got DDoSed to the point where no one could do anything but take it offline.

Minic has some supersecret way to detect aimbotters. Perhaps this tool could be made available to admins?
Obviously if he made it thats his call to make

Not only admins but VIP's
I have played stronghold for the past two days (yesterday being my first) I saw many many MANY hackers...
Tomorrow I'm gonna get a demo editor (if there is one) play stronghold all day WHILE RECORDING at night I'm gonna edit it see how many aimbotters and name changers I record..

Well the accuracy rating could be only reserved for admins/vip's if they wanted to check the logs for more proof.

I didn't say to put people's IP's. That would be horrible. I think it's just good enough if they just put their names.

Yeah postin IP's would be worse FAR worse because I think that breaks a law maybe?
And I think the accuracy is good for VIP's and Admins because that would help my us out a lot (well at least me)

...i'm pretty sure he just checks their lua cache, which for minic is as easy as pissing into a lake

either that, or he checks for any svars that don't match client/server.

It's not violating a law, it's just not a good idea to openly give away a list of players that were banned becasue if one of those players gets banned on several servers that they have never been on they will get pissed. In the case of [community that mass-banned Seth hackers and realeased the Steam IDs] a few of those people had the ability to DDoS and hammered them.

There is no harm in posting the IPs/Steam IDs descreetly but advertising it will do no good.

As for the accuracy thing, it will be realy handy to have it.

I think the idea to add names of banned hackers to loadin screen is a bad idea.
People could start to think of it as an accolade. They get their name broadcaste on a high profile server.
You could however, put up something like "twenty hackers banned this year".
